Buonasera from Kelheim!

After a couple of days in Czechia, we are back in Bavaria and preparing for the first leg of our nomad project, starting this Wednesday. We'll stop in Würzburg and Bonn before we arrive in Paris for a few days.

I'll keep sharing our destinations in future intros. If you're somewhere along the way and want to meet for coffee, just write back. Would love to.

Today there are six products.

The additional one is our own little print magazine that we'll launch during the trip. Thanks to everyone who's already subscribed. It means the world to us. We deliberately decided not to share much anything about the trip on social media, so aside from this intro and the magazine (and the occasional blog post), there won't be much to follow.

The magazine is very time-consuming to make (shout out to my friend Carmelo from Bolzano, who warned me). He also contributed one of his artworks for the magazine's postcard.

But it's also hugely satisfying to think about all the details, like the fonts we use, every word in there, the photos and the products and brands we choose. It really is a little personal project.

If you’re new around here: Every week, I share 5 of the nicest products from Europe I’ve discovered in the past 7 days.

I scout, you explore.

With love 🌞
Jakob

P.S.: The Custom Video Flipbook by VideoToFlip was the most-clicked product in last week's issue. The 80s Dream Lamp by KISMAS came second. Both came in as reader suggestions.

P.P.S.: If you find something that belongs here (also if you made it yourself), send it.

Gropius Low Chair Military Edition, an armchair 🇺🇦

More than 4,000 knots form the net covering this armchair by Kyiv-based noom. Mathematician Svetlana wove the base at the VinnSolard Center in Vinnytsia; leftover fabric from the studio's production was tied into it before it was stretched over the chair in Kyiv. Kateryna Sokolova worked with Nataliya Bakulina and Antonina Latayko on this edition of eight, available by inquiry.

Alex answered my call in #118 for underrepresented corners of Europe with two words: “go ukraine!” Thanks for sending me to noom.

Weltevree Outdooroven in Corten steel with firewood

Outdooroven, a wood-fired outdoor oven 🇳🇱

Dick van Hoff designed the Outdooroven for Dutch brand Weltevree, with an open wood fire below a baking compartment and a flat top you can cook on. Made from 3 mm Corten steel, it reaches up to 350°C and comes with a pizza stone and grill grid. The rust can flake off, which sounds alarming until you read the brand's reassurance: brush it down and the steel still measures 3 mm.

Shapes On Sand notebook by paragraph, tied with a cotton string

Shapes On Sand, a notebook 🇨🇿

The cotton tie is a nice detail on this A5 notebook from Czech stationery studio paragraph. Inside are 140 blank white pages; the cover is printed on 300 gsm Munken paper with an illustration from the studio's Shapes & Blossoms series. Almost a shame to untie it.

Weigh Lighter Backpack 25L 🇳🇴

Oslo-based Db was founded in 2009 by Jon Olsson and Truls Brataas as Douchebags, a name that, in their own words, became less ironic over the years. This 25-liter roll-top weighs 470 grams and opens wide like a climbing rope bag (they call it the burrito opening).
A 16" MacBook Pro fits inside, skis or a splitboard and two ice axes go on the outside. Love the transparent appearance.

11i11 saat automatic mechanical watch, white dial, mesh strap

Mechanical models, an automatic wristwatch 🇦🇹 | 🇨🇭

A supplier sent 11i11 saat the wrong dials, with a white outer ring and a hole at eight o'clock. The Vienna-based brand kept both details, which is a fairly good way to make a watch less predictable. These Swiss-made automatic models use a Sellita SW400-1 movement; the name plays on the resemblance between an Arabic 11 and a Roman II.

Thanks to the reader who suggested this one through the map. You didn’t leave a name, but you have good taste.

PLUS ONE · FROM US

Slowly getting there…

Whereabouts, seven little printed magazines from wherever we are in the next 9 months 🇮🇹

“Real artists ship,” Steve Jobs told the Macintosh team. After weeks of fonts, words and photos, No. 1 of Whereabouts, our little magazine about Merano, is finally ready to go out into the world. Now we find out what you think.

We set the print run in the next two weeks, and make it at cost: what we pay to print and send you the magazine, an artist’s postcard and its folded map.

(Risk-free: If you like hand-made and printed things with character, we think you’ll love it. However, if it isn't for you, write back and you'll get 100% of your money back.)
